Some black Brits on Twitter pointed out the distinct difference in the fervour with which brands, businesses and individuals embraced Black History Month last year, compared to their much looser grip this time around. Popular clothing brand Pretty Little Thing, for example, released a four-part series on how “we can all make a change” last year, but has so far stayed silent this year. The absence of chatter around Black History Month did not go unnoticed among my social media circles. Is it just me, or was there an almost eerie silence from some brands and businesses around Black History Month this year? For all the posting of random black squares on social media and various big-name brands pledging their allegiance to the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, it seems that those same entities have run out of things to say.
